Increasing Environmental Awareness and Recycling Mobile Phones

By

It is always a great thing to contribute positively to the environment and it feels good when you recycle something, especially an electronic device, rather than contributing to the already huge landfills. Mobile phones are one of the most popular electronic devices that you can find being used in the UK today and as a result, many are made redundant when they are still in perfect working order simply because a new model has been released. As a result, it was inevitable that environmental initiatives would be put in place which allowed for them to be recycled and disposed of properly and there are now many companies and charities that will take your old mobile phones as a donation and either recycle or pass on your phone to those less fortunate.
You might start wondering about how you can benefit from recycling your mobile phone now that you know what the options are. When people first started recycling phones they gave them up freely without getting anything in return as this was really the only option other than throwing them in the bin and today you can still do this by giving your phone to charity. You can of course be paid to recycle your old mobile phone but often the benefits of giving to charity outweigh the few pounds you'll get from sending it to a private company. The condition of the used mobile phone will determine what you can do with it as many charities won't have a use for a broken mobile phone.
However, if your phone is broken it is worth contacting a company that will get some use out of it anyway, or at the very least operate an environmental initiative that disposes of it in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. These companies are often able to reuse certain parts when refurbishing old phones or as spares for those phones which need repairing. As part of Corporate Social Responsibility schemes, your company may be able to help you dispose correctly of everything from mobile phones and computers, to paper and printer ink cartridges so with so much environmental awareness in every local community, there really is no excuse to throw anything that can be harmful into the bin.
So now you need to ask yourself what effort it would take to recycle your old mobile phones and realise that the answer is very little and the results of your actions could be huge.
Increase your environmental awareness and get involved by seeing what Corporate Social Responsibility schemes are happening in your area and getting involved where you can.

Recycling Mobile Phones And Various Options

By

Although consumers are being encouraged to recycle and reuse, I realized recently that the electronics industry and especially cell phone companies are responsible for encouraging consumers to accumulate a lot of old cell phones. Some estimate around 800 million of them are lying around unwanted in our homes!
It's easy enough to throw an old cell phone into the garbage, it doesn't look like much but some of the components release highly toxic chemicals into the environment. Imagine 800 million of them rotting away in the ground and you can understand what an environmental nightmare this could become. Toxic chemicals can leach into groundwater which then becomes our drinking water, complete with heavy metals.
It's not hard to find somewhere that recycles mobile phones. The first place to look is online to see if there are any local places where you can drop them off. Local charities are a good place to start. One gives them to the elderly and sets them up to be used in emergency and the recipient is encouraged to carry the phone at all times. If the person needs medical assistance then they simply call 911 and help is at hand.
Another charity works with battered wives. The women that receive these phones for free are often in danger from their ex-husbands or boyfriends, so again these phones are redesigned to be used in emergency situations. The good thing about donating old cell phones to charity is you can get rid of all those old cases and chargers too.
Many old cell phones are obsolete, you can't even give them away and you certainly can't sell them, but you can recycle older mobile phones with some of the big box electronics stores.
One company has come out with an ATM-type machine where you can take your old cell phone. The machine automatically clears the memory and pays you cash on the spot. Most of these machines are concentrated in California but the company is expanding across the country. The company then disposes of the phones in an ecologically-responsible way.
Some mobile phone companies are now including a recycling option right in the box in which you receive your new phone. Fill in a preprinted form and stick the prepaid label on the box and drop it in the mail, so now nobody should have a problem when they want to recycle their old mobile phone.
